Yesterday Easyjet announced that they would drop the £8 booking fee with a new ‘clearer’ £9 administration fee.
The Government are trying to stop these companies adding on all sorts of additional charges when we book on-line. I remember going to play golf in Spain a few years ago and booking with NastyJet. The flights, from memory were £14.99 and 1p for out and back. Great value – and when I checked out my card had been hit for around £180. This was due to the taxes, extra bag for my golf sticks, a check-in fee (because I had a golf bag), credit card fee, booking fee ad nauseum.
In my Industry we would be accused of misrepresentation if we advertised something for £15, but when it came down to it we wanted over ten-times that amount.
But back to EasyJet. They have cleared things up. It is much clearer now, you don’t pay a booking fee of £8, you pay a much more attractive administration fee of £9. And they will still charge you for using a credit card.
I think it disingenuous when these airlines suggest that they are trying to make things clear to their customers. You simply cannot get on a plane flight for 1p. Even if you pay cash, walk on with just a pocketful of luggage, don’t use the toilets or require a glass of water – you pay more than they suggest.
But I do admire Easyjet for selling us the better service for more money. I certainly prefer to pay an administration fee as opposed to a booking fee. You get much better value in my experience and you feel so much more, er, fulfilled.

One of the oldest, most transparent, even sleaziest tricks of the trade is to say you’re doing something to “make things clearer to our customers”. If you offer a good service you charge a fair price, end of. Flights for £14.99 is right up there with the financial “solution” provided by a quick cash loan – the land of the Big Fat Lie.
This really does irritate me. It is the fact that we are all so stupid not to have spotted the ruse? I suppose 49.9% of the population are below average intelligence?
