A new economy on the up – The Web Economy

Most of us rely on the internet to a great extent; this blog only exists because you are a connected person. And the chances are that you buy books from Amazon, pick your news up at bbc.co.uk and send emails as a principal method of communication. 20 years ago none of this existed in our homes!

you may be able to order it on-line but would the Post Office deliver it?

Now we have access to the internet on our telephones. And that is about to grow, It is reckoned that by 2016 about 80% of all internet users will access the web using a mobile phone. Google have concluded a study which also suggests that by 2016 over 3bn people (around half of the population of the planet) will have access to the internet. It is also suggested that around the same time there will be one trillion devices connected to the internet at any one time.

And with that connectivity will come a shift in the way we buy things. In four years the Google study is suggesting that commercial activity on the internet will grow from the present £1.5tn to £2.7tn.

These are amazing figures, except that this still represents a tiny proportion of what we spend. It is around 4% of the total economy – so some way to go. And perhaps some cheer for our High Streets – which still have some place in our super-fast-always-on world. We still like to go and touch and feel stuff…

As I was reminded last week, there are some things that don’t work on-line. My morning dose of Costa Coffee for instance – I might be able to order it, but the delivery might be a little more challenging?

The wobble happened….

I admit it. I went to Costa this week – twice. A free drink on Thursday (it was family and friends day – I was an honorary friend) and a paid for one on Friday. Both at the new drive through at Castle Marina in Nottingham. I was worried about this earlier in the week. It felt dirty.

The UK's first Costa drive-through

The new store, I have to confess, is rather good. It is new after all. It is better inside than Starbucks – which was last upgraded a few years ago. It now looks tired at the side of Costa. There is more bad news for Starbucks – Costa will have wi-fi fitted, it wasn’t working yesterday as they were having some technical issues… But the technical issue at Starby’s is that the numpties at Sainsbury’s say wi-fi interferes with their till system (I think not).

I understand that this is the first Costa drive-through in the UK. Six more are planned this year, but Nottingham has the first past the post badge.

The new Nottingham Best Buy store

Next door, Best Buy opened too yesterday. I didn’t bother early in the morning as they were queuing! And this morning someone called Alesha Dixon is singing. I have no idea who she is.

The store seems to have taken an age to open, which is not surprising as it is cavernous inside. The staff are `ll really friendly and are apparently expert in all manner of technology. I should imagine that Currys, Comet and PC world will be quite worried…

Just thinking through my coffee issue, I wonder if I could go and sit in Costa with my take-away Starbucks?

Do they know it’s Christmas (in December)

At the risk of taking on the mantle of Ebenezer Scrooge – have I missed something? Like November?

On Regent Street yesterday the Christmas lights are in full swing. Today in Costa Coffee all of the Christmas stock is out. I am led to believe that the same will be true in Starbucks tomorrow.

Has no one noticed that it is not yet even November? It is 8 weeks until Christmas – nearly two months!

All we need now is to wheel out Noddy Holder and the crew for a thousand renditions of Merry Christmas Everybody. Or Wham. Or Wizzard (am I boring you yet?).

Monthly magazines have this irritating habit of releasing copies way in advance – and some of the Christmas editions are now out.

I refuse to post a Christmas picture on this blog – until at least December – and even then – don’t hold your breath.

Summer at the Cabby Shack in Plymouth

Summer sky at the Cabby Shack - feel the sun on your back

But what I would like to do, is re-work the Gregorian Calendar (I know its been around since 1582 but that’s a good reason to change it?). So my proposals are:

New Years Day – 1st November
Christmas Day – 25th October
Easter – 4th February
Spring Bank Holiday – 30th March

Great news is you have all missed Christmas. And its New Years Day tomorrow – have the day off. First Foot and all that in the morning. And dust those skis off….

Yours always, Scrooge.

UPDATE 2 November

Costa Coffee this morning: Xmas music is being introduced over next 10 weeks in increments. This week is 25%, Xmas music then in two weeks time up to 50% – you get the picture. Worse still – it’s not Noddy Holder – it is their own “MIke Sammes’ versions. Just like the Pizza Hut days of old – with cheesy cover versions. I don’t know what’s worse – but the Power of Love and Cat People (Frankie Goes etc and Bowie respectively) were unbelievably bad – so you can imagine what the Xmas stuff sounds like. The last moments of a dying cat….
