I'm no fan of supermarkets (they involve something called 'shopping'), but I wonder if there's more to the decline of high streets than Tesco etc? May be it's just me, but the idea of spending an entire morning traipsing from shop to shop in search of everyday staples would fill me with dread, which is why doing it all in one place makes sense. Supermarkets have also raised the game in retailing, and I'm guessing the couple of hundred people your average big store employs will be way ahead of the jobs involved in corner shops..
Problem is, there are just too many supermarkets of all shapes and sizes, and even Tesco has now realised that some of these vast, soulless sheds make for awful shopping experiences.
May be they should sub-let space to some local retailers just to add some variety!
