I’m back, hello how are you? If you are anything like me your inbox has been hammered over the last few days with emails asking whether you can still be friends. People are sorry to see me go. It’s my last chance to stay in touch.
GDPR hits us on Friday. Designed to protect our data and stop spam emails this is going to be fun! I have only accepted two invitations to stay connected. Everyone else who has asked I have ignored and deleted. So I’m expecting a quiet weekend.
But somehow I can’t help but think that this is not going to work. I was offered last week a list of email addresses for ‘marketing’ purposes – only £150. And oddly the authors of the spam, phishing, and just corrupt link-laden emails have decided not to opt into this European ruling. I don’t think they are too worried about the eye-watering fines we are being threatened with.
This has been a good opportunity for business to clean up years of data, we have been sifting through 70,000 of our close friends and acquaintances – some of whom are ‘interesting’ characters. My favourite email address is firstname.lastname@example.org and the best applicant so far is ‘shit tits’. Sorry if you used Mickey Mouse, that’s no longer creative enough.
I’m looking forward to a quiet week next week…
[update 24.5 – I am not being hit every 15 minutes with emails from everyone who needs to tell me about GDPR… please stop.]
